Drone mapping for Myrtle Beach and Horry County
Horry County's coastal plain geography presents specific conditions for drone mapping work. Low relief across most of the county, high water table, tidal influence in areas near the Intracoastal Waterway and the Waccamaw River, and the significant rainfall the Grand Strand receives all affect how sites drain and what the topographic record needs to capture. Civil engineering firms, land developers, and environmental consultants working on Horry County projects use drone mapping for site design surveys, earthwork volume tracking during active grading, and post-construction documentation.
SC Drone Services provides drone mapping surveys for active development and construction sites across Myrtle Beach and Horry County. Standard deliverables include a full-resolution georeferenced orthomosaic (GeoTIFF), a digital elevation model (DEM), and a point cloud in .las format, compatible with Civil 3D, ArcGIS, and standard engineering workflows.
Topographic survey and site design
Pre-grading topographic surveys are the most common application on Horry County development sites. A drone survey of a raw parcel, with ground control points set and surveyed to a licensed land surveyor's specifications, produces a point cloud and DEM with sufficient accuracy for cut/fill design and stormwater grading calculations. On a 100-acre residential subdivision parcel in the Carolina Forest area or a commercial development tract off US-501, a drone collects complete parcel coverage in a single flight.
For coastal plain sites where small elevation changes have significant drainage implications, accurate topo data at the early design stage reduces the risk of grading changes after stormwater management review. Drone mapping at 2-4 centimeter vertical accuracy with GCPs provides a reliable baseline for the stormwater engineer and the civil engineer working the site plan.
Ground control requirements
Drone photogrammetry without ground control points is not suitable for engineering work. For any mapping deliverable intended for cut/fill calculations, grading design, or volume reporting, GCPs must be set and surveyed by a licensed land surveyor tied to the project datum before the flight. On Horry County sites, confirm that any drone operator you engage understands GCP requirements for engineered deliverables. Mapping produced without GCPs is not an engineered survey and should not be used as the basis for grading design.
Earthwork volume tracking and as-built documentation
During active grading on large Horry County residential and commercial projects, bi-weekly or monthly drone flights produce updated DEMs that can be compared flight-to-flight to calculate material moved. On unit-price grading contracts, that independent volume record supports pay application documentation.
Post-grading as-built surveys document actual grade conditions across the site before seeding or final surface treatment, and can be compared against the design surface in Civil 3D to confirm design grade was achieved. On projects with NPDES permit requirements, a post-grading as-built also establishes the baseline condition before the 70% final stabilization threshold that terminates the CGP inspection obligation.
Coverage across Horry and Georgetown counties
Coverage includes all active development areas in Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Conway, Little River, Loris, Carolina Forest, and surrounding Horry County communities. Georgetown County sites including Pawleys Island, Litchfield, and Murrells Inlet are within scheduling range. For Horry County projects that also require NPDES BMP inspection documentation during active grading, mapping and BMP inspection flights can be combined in a single site visit.
